Georgia's National Bank Reports Record Enforcement Against Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing
Georgia's central banking authority has released its 2025 annual report documenting substantial enforcement actions against financial crimes. The National Bank imposed fines totaling 9,588,950 lari in penalties for breaches of the country's money laundering and terrorism financing prevention legislation during the year.
The report reveals a comprehensive supervisory framework addressing compliance issues across the financial sector. Financial institutions submitted regular reports on their international sanctions adherence, which were reviewed and processed by the central bank throughout the reporting period. Notably, the National Bank conducted on-site inspections of multiple financial institutions to verify compliance with sanctions regulations and specific directives concerning Iran-related restrictions.
The Financial Monitoring Agency intensified oversight activities during 2025, examining 50 representatives from the financial sector to ensure their adherence to Georgian anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing statutes. This targeted examination program reflected authorities' commitment to strengthening the financial system's defensive measures against illicit flows.
The report underscores a shift in regulatory priorities during 2025. Bank officials highlighted that particular emphasis was placed on ensuring financial institutions' conformity with international sanctions regimes.
The enforcement actions documented in the report represent part of Georgia's ongoing effort to combat financial crimes and maintain the country's standing within the international financial system.
