Percentage calculator

This free percentage calculator does six things: it finds a percent of a number, works out what percent one number is of another, finds the percent change, adds a percentage to an amount, subtracts a percentage, and recovers the base amount from a price that already includes a percentage. It's handy for discounts, VAT, mark-ups, price changes and statistics, and works the same with lari (₾), manat (₼) and dram (֏). You can type decimals with a dot (12.5) or a comma (12,5).

How the calculation works

'X% of Y': result = Y × X / 100. 'X is what % of Y': result = X / Y × 100. 'Change': result = (Y − X) / X × 100, where positive is an increase and negative a decrease. 'Y + X%': Y × (1 + X/100). 'Y − X%': Y × (1 − X/100). 'Base of Y that includes X%': Y / (1 + X/100). The quick buttons fill in 18% (the standard VAT rate in Georgia and Azerbaijan), 20% (VAT in Armenia) or common discounts.

Worked example

15% of 200 GEL is 30 GEL. Adding 18% VAT to a 1,000 GEL price gives 1,180 GEL. From 1,180 GEL including VAT, the price without VAT is 1,000 GEL (VAT = 180). A 25% discount on 500 AZN leaves 375 AZN. Going from 200 to 260 is a +30% increase.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a discount?

Pick 'Y − X%': Y is the price, X the discount percent. The result is the discounted price, and a separate line shows the discount amount.

How do I take VAT out of a price?

Pick 'Base of Y that includes X%' and enter 18 (Georgia and Azerbaijan, standard rate) or 20 (Armenia). For example, 118 GEL contains 18 GEL of VAT, so the price without VAT is 100 GEL. Taking 18% of 118 is a common mistake. For a fuller tax breakdown, see our VAT calculator.

A price went up 20% and then down 20% — is it back where it started?

No. 100 → +20% = 120 → −20% = 96. Each percentage is taken from the new amount, so you end up 4% lower.

What is percent change?

The relative difference between two numbers; positive is an increase, negative a decrease. For example, a listing price dropping from 20,000 to 18,000 is a −10% change.

Can I use decimals?

Yes, with a dot (12.5) or a comma (12,5). Spaces or commas as thousands separators work too (1 250 000 or 1,250,000).
