Georgia's Railways is implementing a $1.7 billion modernization initiative spanning the next decade. The project will refresh the nation's rail infrastructure through investments sourced from multiple channels. Key components include acquiring 50 new locomotives, 1500 new wagons, and 10 additional passenger trains to boost freight capacity and passenger comfort while reducing journey times.
Railway stations and track sections will receive complete modernization with modern automated control systems. A new 18-kilometer railway line will connect to Anaklia port. Recent operational improvements have already generated 231 million lari in savings. After infrastructure enhancements, transit times on major freight routes will decrease from 24 hours to 12 hours, and cargo capacity will double from 15 million tons. New passenger services on key routes are being launched.
